The FedRev project is dedicated to the relationship between society and the mass media it produces, and FedRev evaluates art from a progressive perspective with this relationship in mind. How does society influence art and culture, and how does art and culture influence society? FedRev is a place for lively, active analysis and discussion about film, music, television, and the arts, and how they relate to what’s going on in the world around us.
The goal is for the site to be a celebration of art, culture, and humanity while advocating for a higher quality mainstream and speaking out against injustice, and resisting the corporate media industry’s attempt to turn people into unthinking, passive consumers. FedRev believes it is important for people to recognize the political nature of the art they consume and seeks to raise the level of dialogue about the politics of entertainment.
Bob Avakian, the Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, said it best, “I think people recognize, or should recognize, that art does have a political character to it; it’s either going to serve one kind of politics or another. In other words, I don’t think there’s such a thing as art for art’s sake, art that’s pure and above politics and doesn’t represent the point of view ultimately of one class or another and one way or another of viewing how society is and how it ought to be. Even the most subtle things, for example things that may influence politics indirectly and express a viewpoint indirectly, do so nonetheless, and sometimes the more subtly they do so the more powerfully they do so exactly because it’s not overt.”
Politics are important because we live them every day, and therefore FedRev factors a progressive political worldview into analysis of entertainment media. FedRev will draw attention to quality works of art, especially if they illuminate the injustices of the system or promote a positive progressive outlook. Art that does the opposite by promoting a reactionary worldview will be called out.
FedRev invites you to actively engage the site. The idea is to start a productive conversation that helps to increase our understanding of the world through the entertainment we enjoy. FedRev aspires to be a valuable resource for people who want to engage with art and culture in an attempt to look beyond the surface and gain a deeper understanding of the media society consumes, and ultimately make the world a better place in the process.
